Anthony Edwards said that Team USA won their fifth straight Olympic gold medal in basketball, but the celebration was momentarily postponed. According to the NBA star, he, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry had to undergo drug tests as soon as possible after they had defeated all opponents thus delaying the locker room celebrations of team members.
The Minnesota Timberwolves guard disclosed this during an interview with Jalen Rose at Fanatics Fest. “We couldn’t really be in there before we went out because you know I mean like me him Steph,” Edwards pointed out.
It is unclear if this information was supposed to be kept private or not although Edwards acted indifferent about it when discussing it informally. For Durant, though, he didn’t want to talk much about it while Edwards took a different approach.
This prompted Edwin’s joke; “So yeah ever since then Joe’s been stressing”.
Standout Performances Lead to Testing
The trio had just put on excellent performances for which they were also tested for drugs including Stephen Curry who was impressive during the semifinal against Serbia and the final against France where they won gold respectively.
In the group stage Curry struggled but he caught fire scoring 36 points against Serbia including nine three-pointers. He made a critical steal followed by a fast break layup which gave team USA 91-86 lead with only one minute left on the clock.
Curry stayed h-t through his gold-medal game leading his side all through from behind the arc with 24 points being scored by him alone. In less than three minutes of play time for instance, The 36-year-old shooting guard connected four shots just outside perimeter line finishing with what turned out to be game-ending “Night night” over two protectors’ heads.
Olympic Drug Testing Protocols
Edwards may have taken things lightly when talking about these investigations but actually drugs are very serious business at Olympics games. Paris 2024 Olympics official website explains that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has a strong policy against doping.
The rule that came into effect after the 1968 Mexico City Games requires random drug tests before and after every competition. They were not targeted due to their excellent performance; rather, Edwards, Curry and Durant just followed the rules.
Nonetheless, Edwards’ lighter side of things to do with this makes an otherwise grim subject such as Olympics and drugs.
